TELEPHONE CALL You should call the office of each of the County Commissioners listed above, or as many as you can. Ask for the commissioner
by name, but be prepared to leave your message with an aide. Most lawmakers simply do not handle such calls personally.
Be polite. We understand that you may be upset by the proposed ordinance. You should be! But
rude behavior will not win any support for naturists.
Be prepared to give your name and address. Anonymous calls are disregarded. NAC is urging all naturists to call, but contacts from Florida residents - and
especially citizens of Hillsborough County - are obviously most important and influential.
You don't have to identify yourself as a naturist.
You can be just a "concerned citizen" if you wish. But if you are able to speak proudly as a naturist, it helps the Naturist Action Committee to deal with the Board of County Commissioners from a position of greater strength.
Say clearly that you are opposed to the proposed county ordinance concerning nudity. It's the duty of the commissioners to cull out bad proposals.
NAC's Position Paper on this issue
contains details of several possible talking points. Spend a couple of minutes reviewing the issues before you call. Click here to view NAC's Position Paper (PDF format, 114K).
The proposed ordinance is:
- unnecessary and redundant. Hillsborough County already has existing ordinances to address public nudity and adult businesses.
- poorly worded. The community does NOT need local laws that include such dense and convoluted language.
- based on "junk science." Each of David Caton's so-called studies has been discredited. His conclusions don't apply to adult businesses, and they certainly don't apply to naturist activities, which they would
also prohibit.
- not based on proven law. The promoters of the proposed ordinance have compared it to the St. Johns County ordinance, which received approval by the U.S. Supreme Court 11 years ago. But the newly
proposed Hillsborough County ordinance deviates significantly from the St. Johns County measure. The two cannot be considered as the same, and the "preapproval" argument is deceptive and false.
EMAIL Time is short, but you can still write by email to each of the County Commissioners listed above, or as many as you can. Follow the
points listed above for telephone calls.
Please sign your email and give the address of your residence. Unsigned correspondence is discarded almost immediately.
Thank you for choosing to make a difference!
