******************************************************************** NATURIST ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE ****************************************************************** http://www.naturistsociety.com/NAC/ ****************************************************************** DATE : October 23, 2003 SUBJECT: Wisconsin Assembly Bill 574 TO : All Naturists Dear Naturist, The Naturist Action Committee wishes to make you aware of important new developments in the matter of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 574. AB 574 is legislation that would prohibit nudity on all Wisconsin public land owned, managed, supervised, or controlled by a state agency. TWO AMENDMENTS TO THE BILL Rep. Daniel LeMahieu (R-Oostburg), sponsor of AB 574, has offered two amendments to his own bill. Amendment 1 seeks to correct an error in nomenclature in the bill's reference to a road near Mazo Beach. LeMahieu, whose district is across the state from Mazomanie, is unfamiliar with the area. In drafting the bill, he twice referred to Conservation Road as "Conservatory Road." The amendment proposes to correct one instance of the error, while leaving the other faulty reference intact. Amendment 2 clarifies LeMahieu's intent to single out users of the clothing-optional beach as targets of the proposed law. As introduced, AB 574 would prohibit all parking in the lot near Mazo Beach. The amendment makes the parking ban effective only from May 1 through September 30, avoiding likely opposition to the bill from the powerful Wisconsin hunting lobby. HEARING SCHEDULED A public hearing for AB 574 will take place before the Assembly's Tourism Committee. The hearing is scheduled for the North Hearing Room of the Capitol at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 28, 2003. The State Capitol Building is located in the center of downtown Madison, on the Capitol Square. The Naturist Action Committee encourages concerned naturists to attend the hearing. All citizens are entitled to speak, but we want to avoid overwhelming the committee with speakers at this particular hearing. Coordinating the efforts of local, regional and national groups and organizations, we have put together a core group of speakers. If you feel you should be among that group, please contact Nicky Hoffman by e-mail: nickyh@naturistsociety.com. Even if you don't speak, your presence at the hearing in opposition to the bill will be extremely important. Please plan to attend, especially if you are a Wisconsin resident. Meet with NAC coordinators in the hallway outside the hearing room at approximately 9:45 AM. WHAT IS NAC DOING? The Naturist Action Committee has retained the services of an experienced professional legislative lobbyist. The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) and the Midwest Sunbathing Association (MSA) have each graciously committed to share in funding the expense of the lobbyist. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? NAC encourages you to attend the committee hearing on October 28. If you haven't already done so, NAC urges you to contact members of the Assembly Committee on Tourism and express opposition to AB 574. Contacts from Wisconsin residents are most important to state lawmakers, of course, but since this is the Tourism Committee, its members should certainly be expected to understand the value of comments from those who live outside the state.
