DATE: December 2, 2012 SUBJECT: Florida: Haulover boat storage facility
TO: Naturists and other concerned citizens
Dear Naturist,
This is an Action Alert from the Naturist Action Committee. In close coordination with the local naturist activists of South Florida Free Beaches /
Florida Naturist Association, NAC is asking for your immediate involvement. At issue is a planned boat storage facility that threatens to diminish public access to Haulover Beach, an important designated public
clothing-optional beach that is a part of Haulover Park in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Naturists are calling for the commissioners to follow established legal procedure for such public projects and they are asking for a
proper study before the facility is irrevocably approved for construction. Neither has been done. The present emergency effort is aimed at postponement of an imminent hearing that may otherwise seal the deal on the matter.
NAC IS ASKING YOU TO TAKE ACTION: WRITE TO MIAMI-DADE COMMISSIONERS
Time is extremely short. NAC asks that you contact as many Miami-Dade commissioners as possible. Make your comments by e-mail or by phone. A list of Commissioners and their contact information is given below.
WHO SHOULD WRITE? NAC is requesting ALL NATURISTS and other concerned individuals to contact
Miami-Dade commissioners on this important issue, regardless of your place of residence. Lawmakers and policy-makers in South Florida understands the importance of out-of-town and out-of-state visitors who come to enjoy the
region. While all are encouraged to make their voices heard, the participation of South Florida residents is, of course, particularly important.

Richard Mason of SFFB/FNA writes two days ago: We've just learned that on Tuesday, December 4th, the Miami-Dade County
Commissioners will be voting for acceptance of the Revised General Plan for Haulover Park.
The main revision to the current General Plan is a 580 car Boat Storage Facility to be built in the North
Parking Lot, the lot closest to the naturist beach. It takes up as much room as two football fields and will leave many naturist beach users hiking with their beach gear an extra mile because there will be
about 100 less parking spaces. Not to mention more traffic.
Here's our chance to stop this development from being snuck in the back door by Sally Heyman, Haulover Park's Commissioner. We
are the citizens who call Haulover Beach "our" beach and we deserve to be heard on this issue. This plan will turn this public land into a commercial development, which, by law, requires a
majority of a countywide vote. That's what she wants to avoid.
In 2001 the County Commission approved a Haulover Beach Park Master Plan, determining that the best location for the Boat Storage
House was at the current location of the existing boat storage rack. We believe those reasons are still valid.
We are emailing, hand delivering and calling the M-D County Mayor and all County Commissioners, asking
that this hearing be postponed for at least 60 days so interested parties can be brought up to date on the issue and submit feedback to the Board of Commissioners to consider. We're providing them a summary of the
main objections expressed by you through SFFB. We're hoping that the Commissioners will consider this input. The Mayor has recommended this plan be approved.
We are also enlisting the help of The Naturist
Society, The Naturist Action Committee, Gay Naturist International, B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation and SFFB sponsors and friends. I believe we can, united, make our opinions heard.
Please find a moment to email or phone in
your request for the
rescheduling of this hearing this weekend, or phone them on Monday. Below you'll find a contact list with name, email and phone numbers. If you have specific objections to the plan, please let them know.

You can find a list of concerns on the South Florida Free Beaches website at www.sffb.com/pdfs/boathouseNov2012.pdf so you can understand the impact of this storage facility on those who enjoy the freedom of Haulover Beach. Since this is considered a tourist destination, snowbirds' interests carry as much weight as local users, so everyone's efforts count. We hope you'll take this opportunity to express your opinion.
We need to be prepared if this effort fails to get the issue tabled, and
we won't know that until the meeting. Therefore, anyone who can attend the meeting needs to be there to voice their concerns. You must be registered to speak. You can fill out and print the speakers card in advance at http://www.miamidade.gov/commission/library/agenda-coordination-speaker- information-card-against.pdf or you can fill it out there and give it to the Clerk when you arrive. The public meeting begins at 9:30 AM on December 4, 2012, but try to be there by 9:00 A.M.
We expect the issue to be heard mid-morning. Location is:
County Commission Chambers 2nd Floor, Stephen Clark Center 111 N.W. First Street Miami, FL
It would be
very helpful if those who attended the August 20th "public
hearing" in Sunny Isles were on hand to inform the Board of Commissioners about the details of that meeting and the handling of citizens' concerns by Commissioner Heyman.
If this Revised
General Plan is passed, the Boat Storage House will most likely end up in the North Parking Lot. It's very rare to amend the General Plan once it's been approved.
If you have any questions, feel free to call me. I
hope to see you there and thanks in advance for your help.
